New Adventures

Six months ago I left my job of nearly nine years. It was time to try something different. This is a quick summary of that "something different". I've spent a lot of time staying up late, sleeping in, trying new things and generally doing whatever I feel like each day. It's been pretty great.

Immediately after quitting, my partner and I hopped on a plane to Hawaii. We spent two weeks on Maui, one on Oahu, and one in San Francisco.

When I got back, I took time to learn and play an intricate board game with friends. I wouldn't have done this while working. Providing shareholder value took a lot out of me.

I drove up to Belmar, NJ, to visit the East Coast Vintage Computer Festival with my partner.

I took David Beazley's week-long intensive Rust course and had a blast.

I learned to play mahjong.

I high tea'd in downtown DC.

I started working out and running more regularly.

I visited many of the Smithsonians.

I sold unused doodads on Facebook Marketplace.

I raced in my first autocross.

I purchased bowling shoes and a summer pass. I bowled at odd hours for free.

I rewrote this website in Clojure, by hand.

I took an intro-to-sailing lesson. I attempted a full course, but was thwarted by the weather.

I cooked new recipes.

I visited Mount Vernon on the 4th of July.

I recovered old photos and documents on my high school computer.

I visited family in Central Florida and ran the Watermelon 5K.

I took an in-depth tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's work at Florida Southern College.

I visited Bok Tower Gardens in Central Florida.

I played an appropriate amount of Civ V.

I spent two weeks in Mérida, Mexico at a homestay learning Spanish.

I took a private archaeology tour of the Late Classic sites of Uxmal and Kabah.

And now I pack for a multi-week road trip along the Florida coast.
